Why is Good Friday Called Good?
In our country, the day of death is generally considered inauspicious and a day of sorrow. But when we talk about the death of Jesus Christ on the cross, this day is called optimistic. It is called Good Friday because on this day Jesus Christ, the perfect God and perfect man in the flesh, went to the cross for the forgiveness and salvation of the sins of us sinners. He sacrificed himself for us.
The day of Jesus’ crucifixion, that is, Good Friday, was the saddest in the history of the world. On this day, God, the creator of the world, took human form and died on the cross. Despite being a day of sorrow and sorrow, it is called auspicious or a good day for three main reasons –
Because On This Day, Both The Just And Fierce Wrath Of God And Mercy Were Displayed Together On The Cross
Good Friday was simultaneously a sorrowful and joyful and life-giving day in the entire human history. On this day, God the Father poured out his holy and just wrath for our sins on his only Son, Lord Jesus Christ. Because the righteous God’s wrath was kindled against us sinners. That wrath and judgment were to be faced by all mankind, but Jesus appeased God the Father by enduring His fierce wrath on the cross for us. Now He is the propitiation for our sins.
Not only did God pour out His wrath on the Lord Jesus on this day, but He also clearly demonstrated His love and mercy. You and I did not love Him first, yet He loved us first and gave His Son to atone for our sins. It is so wonderful and amazing that God the Father gave His only Son in exchange for our sins so that He could atone for all our sins by being sacrificed on the cross. At the same time, Jesus’ crucifixion is a similar manifestation of God’s infinite mercy for all mankind. Therefore, the day of Jesus’ crucifixion and death is auspicious for us.
Because On This Day Jesus Suffered And Sacrificed Himself For The Forgiveness Of Our Sins
The Lord Jesus Christ became the penal substitutionary propitiation in our place by suffering and sacrificing Himself on the Cross. He bore the penalty of sins and all suffering on our behalf and became a suffering servant for sins. Just as the prophet Isaiah prophesied about Jesus Christ about 700 years ago: “Surely he has borne our pains and carried our sorrows…but he was pierced for our transgressions, he was bruised for our iniquities, the chastisement of our peace was on him, by his stripes we are healed…the Lord has laid the iniquity of us all on him…”. So that you and I can receive forgiveness of sins.
Not only did Jesus Christ suffer on the Cross for us, but at the same time Jesus Christ sacrificed Himself once and for all on the Cross of Calvary as the perfect sacrifice for our sins and iniquities. “For the blood of bulls and goats can’t take away sins”. Therefore He atoned for our sins by sacrificing Himself on our behalf. He took the punishment, condemnation, and curse of sin from us upon Himself.
So that by taking away our sins He can make us completely holy and blameless. Therefore those who believe in Christ are not condemned, God’s word tells us that “…there is now no condemnation for those who are in Christ Jesus”. For this reason, the crucifixion of Jesus i.e. Good Friday is good or auspicious for us Christians.
Because On This Day We Were Reconciled To God Through The Crucifixion Of Jesus
The crucifixion of Jesus is very important for us Christians because the cross is the place where heaven and earth were united, that is, God and man were united. It is through this cross that we, the rebels and the unrighteous, were brought close to God. We could not come close to God on our own, but Jesus Christ brought us close to God the Father by sacrificing Himself on the cross. Therefore, the Apostle Paul reminds believers that we are hopeless and without God in the world. Once we were far from Jesus Christ, now we are brought close to Him through the blood of Christ.
In Christ Jesus, not only are we brought close to God, but at the same time, we are reconciled to God through His crucifixion. Through His shed blood, peace was established and reconciliation was made between God and man. Good Friday reminds us of our past and present spiritual state “There was a time when we were alienated and enemies in mind and engaged in evil deeds, but he (Jesus) reconciled us in his physical body through his death on the cross…”
Therefore, for all these reasons, the crucifixion and death of Jesus Christ are celebrated as Good Friday on Friday all over the world. He opened the way to salvation through his life, death on the cross, and resurrection. Therefore, this day of Jesus’ crucifixion is called auspicious, because the way to salvation has opened for the entire human race.
