On that day, his newlywed wife decided to keep him awake. She laid out all her ornaments and gold coins at the entrance of the room and lit numerous lamps. She also sang songs and narrated stories to keep her husband from sleeping.
When Yama, the god of death, came disguised as a serpent, the bright lights of the lamps and the shining jewelry dazzled his eyes, preventing him from entering the room. Mesmerized by the display, Yama sat on the heap of treasures until dawn. As a result, the prince’s life was spared, and from that day forward, the tradition of lighting lamps to ward off death on Dhanteras began.
